Stuck, confused, or is something on fire? (Not literally, we hope.) Here's how to get help.
Write to us
Tell us which iPhone or iPad you're using, its iOS version, and what happened. A screenshot helps. A real person reads every email.
Playing together
How do we play together?
- Get everyone onto the same Wi-Fi network. No internet connection is needed.
- One person taps HOST A PLANT. Their device is the host and runs the plant.
- Everyone else taps JOIN FRIENDS and picks the host's plant from the list.
- Plant not in the list? After a few seconds a CAN'T FIND IT? button appears. Tap it and type the host's 4-digit JOIN CODE. The host sees the code on the little Wi-Fi sign at the top of their screen in the Break Room. You can also type the full address shown next to the code (it looks like 192.168.1.23).
A crew is 1 to 4 players, each on their own iPhone or iPad with NUKEEZ installed. iPhones and iPads can play in the same crew.
JOIN FRIENDS is empty. What now?
- Same network? Check that everyone is on the same Wi-Fi, and nobody is on mobile data instead.
- Local Network permission. On every device, open Settings › NUKEEZ and make sure Local Network is on. Without it, iOS won't let NUKEEZ see the other devices.
- Use the join code. Some routers block the little “hello” a host sends out. Tap CAN'T FIND IT? and type the host's 4-digit JOIN CODE instead.
- Guest networks. Hotel, school and office Wi-Fi often stops devices from seeing each other at all. A home network usually works best.
- “Couldn't reach that plant.” Check the code against the host's screen and try again.
Can I play alone? Do we need four people?
Tap PLAY to run a plant on your own with an NPC crew. With friends, the NPC crew fills any empty seats, and you can hire more crew in the Break Room. They're helpful, mostly. They also shout.
Do I need the internet?
No. Playing together only needs a shared Wi-Fi network, even one with no internet connection. Playing alone needs nothing at all. (If you use iCloud sync, it catches up whenever your device is online.)
Your save
How does iCloud sync work?
If your iPhone or iPad is signed in to iCloud, NUKEEZ quietly keeps your Nukee and your progress in step between your own devices, through your own iCloud account. Play on your phone, carry on on your iPad, and a new phone or a reinstall picks up where you left off. There's nothing to set up and no account to make. We never see any of it.
It syncs when the game starts, when you come back to it, and shortly after it saves. If something hasn't arrived, check that both devices use the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on, then give it a minute.
With iCloud off or signed out, NUKEEZ just saves on the device.
How do I turn iCloud sync off?
Tap the settings cog at the top right of the title screen and switch off iCloud sync. Your save stays on the device, and the game plays exactly the same.
Sound and voice
How does voice chat work? What's the mute badge?
NUKEEZ is made for yelling across a room, so voice chat is off by default. If your crew is in different rooms, the host can turn on proximity voice chat with the radio in the Break Room (“Far apart — radios on!”). You then hear crewmates louder the closer their Nukee stands to yours. Tap the radio again to switch it off (“Same room — just yell!”).
While voice chat is on, a round microphone badge sits in the bottom-left corner of your screen. Tap it to mute yourself: it turns grey with a red slash. Tap it again to talk. Your device remembers your choice.
Your voice goes only to the other devices in your game on the same Wi-Fi. It's never recorded and never goes over the internet. To stop NUKEEZ using the microphone at all, turn off Microphone in Settings › NUKEEZ.
How do I turn the music or sound off?
Tap the settings cog on the title screen and use the Music and Sounds switches. Each device remembers its own.
The iPhone's silent switch (or Silent mode on the Action button) doesn't mute NUKEEZ. That's on purpose: with four phones in one room, everyone needs to hear their own. The volume buttons work as usual.
The game
Which devices does NUKEEZ run on?
iPhone and iPad. One purchase covers both on the same Apple Account, and a crew can mix iPhones and iPads. The App Store page lists the minimum iOS version.
What does the difficulty dial do?
The big brass crew dial in the Break Room sets how hard your NPC crewmates work. The host turns it (it's also in the settings cog on the title screen), and everyone can see where it points. Stars and pay stay the same at every setting.
- Easy as Doughnut Pie The NPC crew are quick and careful, and they pick up jobs nobody has claimed.
- Nukee Average The crew as they are. This is where it starts.
- WE NEED AN ADULT! I AM AN ADULT! Slower, sloppier, fonder of the wrong tool, and prone to dithering over a breakdown until somebody calls them by name. Funny, never unwinnable.
What's in the Reactor Library?
The bookshelf in the Break Room holds the Reactor Library. Walk up to it and tap READ to pick a book:
- Nukee Plants: for every plant, a silly page from the Nukee Guide, then its True Story, about the real reactor that inspired it, with sourced facts and credited photos.
- Nukee Physics: how each idea works in NUKEEZ, then how it works in real life.
- Meet the Nukeez: a yearbook of the crew.
- Elements of Nukeez: what reactors are made of.
- Reactorz for Dumbledums: the game manual.
A plant you haven't unlocked yet shows as a silhouette until you get there.
Is this a real reactor simulator?
No. NUKEEZ is a cartoon. It borrows real ideas (hotter water really does make a turbine more efficient), then squashes, speeds up and sillies everything, so that four friends can yell about it.
Real nuclear plants are nothing like a NUKEEZ shift. They're run by trained crews with many layers of safety, and they're very safe. To learn how the game works, read Reactorz for Dumbledums in the Reactor Library. For the real stories behind the plants, read Nukee Plants and Nukee Physics.
Are there ads or in-app purchases?
No. You pay once on the App Store, and everything is in the game, unlocked by playing. No ads, no accounts, and NUKEEZ collects nothing. See the privacy policy.
